These Non Profit organizations either enlisted the help of our volunteers to assemble and finish their Silent Auction quilts or we designed special quilts to donate for their event. They were all very appreciative of the time, effort and talent put into their quilts.

2007 “Memories of Trees ”
FHQ volunteers donated over 100 hours in assembling, quilting and binding this beautiful quilt from the Alzheimer's Association in 2007. The theme this year is 'trees'.
The center of each block is a tree, painted by an Alzheimer's patient, and reproduced on fabric. Other Alzheimer Assoc. volunteers add the 'crazy quilt' pieces around the pictures and hand-embellished each one of the blocks with yarn, shells, lace, beads, embroidery, etc.
The sashing & outer border is velvet.
2008 Alzheimer's Quilt “Memories of Birds ”
The birds in the center of each block were originally painted by Alzheimer's patients and printed on fabric. Staff members created the 'crazy quilt' blocks using satins, velvets and other nice textured fabrics. (25 hours) Each block was hand-embellished with embroidery, ribbon, buttons, beads, etc. (375 hours) Firehouse Quilts volunteers spent 55 hours assembling the blocks with sashings and borders, using machine quilting where possible and hand-tacking each seam line in the nine blocks to stabilize it. This wall hanging will be displayed at our 3rd Annual Quilt Show after being sold at the Alzheimer's Silent Auction in June.
2009 Alzheimer's Quilt “Memories of Flowers”
Flowers in the center of each block were painted by Alzheimer's patients again this year and transferred onto fabric. Staff at the Denver office of Alzheimer's Association and others affected by the Alzheimer's disease in some way, pieced the nine 'crazy quilt' blocks (22 hours) and beautifully embellished them (570 hours) before handing them off to the Firehouse Quilts volunteers. Our Firehouse Quilts volunteers dedicated 65 hours into piecing and assembling the top of the quilt, machine quilting the borders and sashings, adding a hanging sleeve so it can be displayed as a wall hanging, finished the outer edges with contrasting binding and hand-tacked all the seamlines within each block to stabilize the entire piece. Six of the eight volunteers from FHQ went to the Alzheimer's office to deliver the finished quilt and we got a nice picture.

Highlands Ranch Community Association
This quilt was completed in time to donate to the Special Needs Sweetheart Dance at Highlands Ranch Community Association. The young lady that won our grand prize Sweetheart Quilt was so thrilled, she was showing it to everyone in the building on her way out the door.
Several of us also volunteered to help work at the dance itself and handed out some great stuffed animals.
We also provided a lot of cute stuffed animals for door prizes.

Primrose School Littleton, CO Susan Howarth, Sara Van Horne & Jacque Schneider work together, laying out the blocks for more volunteers to help assemble.
This quilt is very similar to the quilt we made for the HRCA Special Needs dance. We used red hearts instead of pink for this quilt.
9-Patches and heart blocks make a nice combination for the silent auction quilt. |
